But watchOS 6 may change all that. The beta 2 of the system has activated a new update system, with which we can update watchOS without practically having to resort to the iPhone. The only thing you would need, according to your own indications, is that the clock is charging (we continue with the minimum of 50%) and is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
The road to an independent clock
As it has been discovered by several developers, we can check if there are watchOS updates available through a menu on the watch itself. For the moment in the beta 2 of watchOS 6 you have to accept the user conditions in the iPhone, but as they say in AppleInsider, it may be an intermediate step that they also manage to take to the clock in the successive betas.

That does not mean that Apple Watch can work without an iPhone: it will still be mandatory to link them with the phone . Anyway, these developments of watchOS 6 are all a sign that indicate that future generations of Apple Watch could become completely independent. And that could translate into an increase in sales.
