Police documents detailing the death of a 23-month-old girl whose blood contained ten times the amount of fentanyl required to kill an average adult user were revealed Monday.

On Jan. 2, around 1:20 p.m., police were summoned to an apartment at 345 S. 7th Ave. According to police records, a woman called 911 screaming that her 3-year-old baby was not breathing and that she “has blood all over her.”

Alonzo Ray Montoya, 31, and Nicole Danielle Casias, 30, allegedly discovered their infant unresponsive and not breathing. Despite the efforts of Brighton Fire, Platte Valley Ambulance, and Brighton Police to save her life, she was pronounced dead at the Platte Valley Medical Center.

According to recently released arrest records, Montoya and Casias were both spotted on house video cameras taking fentanyl and crack cocaine with the child present the evening before she was found dead.

According to police, the toddler was put to bed at 12:34 a.m. on Jan. 2 and was not checked on until 1:18 p.m. on the same day, more than 12 hours later.

The toddler sobbed many times during the night, according to a surveillance video, while Montoya and Casias were spotted inside the flat using and selling narcotics. The toddler sobbed at 2:18 a.m., 2:23 a.m., 5:32 a.m., 6:06 a.m., and 6:51 a.m., according to the cameras. Many of the shouts were loud and painfully forced, according to police.

Blood tests revealed that the child not only had 10 times the amount of fentanyl required to kill an average adult user, but she had also been exposed to meth, cocaine, marijuana, and buprenorphine.

According to police documents, the toddler had enough fentanyl in her system that she consumed it rather than being exposed to fentanyl smoke alone.

Montoya and Casias have been charged with child abuse that resulted in death as well as fentanyl distribution.
