A heartfelt appeal from Ukraine’s president: “We need help from everybody”

A heartfelt appeal from Ukraine's president:

As Europe’s second-largest country strengthens its defense, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Ukrainian people in a televised speech that the Russians had suffered “serious losses.”

All sanctions against Ukrainian nationals who are ready to protect the country “with weapons in their hands” would be lifted, he said.

With so many injured individuals in hospitals, Ukraine’s president urged citizens to donate blood.

He said: “We need help from everybody.”

Kyiv has also stated that it has severed diplomatic ties with Russia, following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine by land, air, and sea on Thursday.

Early in the morning, explosions could be heard in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. Gunshots rang out near the city’s main airport, as sirens blared throughout the city.

In comments translated into English, Mr Zelenskyy said: “They attacked our country early in the morning just like Fascist Germany did during the Second World War. Today our two countries are on different sides of history. [The] Russian Federation is on the side of evil, but Russian nationals will decide today what side they will want to be on.

“Those that have some conscience, they should stand against the war against Ukraine.”

Mr. Zelenskyy urged residents who had military expertise to join Ukraine’s defense forces and report to the ministry of internal affairs.

He further said: “We have wounded soldiers in hospitals that require blookkd donations. Please join and dontate blood.”
