The girl was outraged by the fact that in the deck of cards the king was valued more than the queen, so she decided to make her own changes.

In the Netherlands, a student created a deck of gender-neutral cards, outraged by the fact that in the usual – the king is more valuable than the queen.

According to Indy Mellink, the usual playing cards are a classic example of centuries-old inequality, when a man has a priori more power than a woman.

“If we have this kind of hierarchy in the game, then this subtle inequality affects people’s daily lives. It’s another way of saying, ‘Hey, you are less important.”

Even such little things play an important role,” says the 23-year-old student.

After several unsuccessful attempts, the girl was able to develop a “genderless” deck, in which jacks, queens and kings were replaced with gold bars, silver coins and bronze shields. In this regard, Mellink named her version of the cards after the colors used – GSB (Gold, Silver, Bronze).

The first 50 decks were already sold out by her friends and family, and later she also put up gender-neutral cards for sale on the Internet. For several months, they were purchased by about 1.5 thousand people in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium and the USA.

Game stores are also interested in the development of the student. At the same time, in order to start using a new deck at a professional gaming table, for example, in a casino, it would be necessary to completely revise the rules, which they do not plan to do in the near future.

Recall that earlier in the United States released a gender-neutral Barbie. The dolls have different skin colors and all the necessary details to select the desired gender characteristics.
