The family of Alessia Piperno, an Italian woman now being held in Iran, is extremely concerned, as expressed by Piperno’s father.

Following the onset of street protests over the death in detention of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who was detained by “morality police” for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s dress code, a major wave of arrests has been made throughout Iran.

“We are very worried. Unfortunately, the situation is not good,” Piperno Father told ANSA.

“We are in contact with the foreign ministry’s crisis unit, which has activated all the relevant procedures”.

According to Piperno, his daughter called him on Sunday from a prison in Tehran.

After Alessia’s phone call from jail yesterday, Alberto Piperno said, “we haven’t had any news, we haven’t heard from her.”

Alberto Piperno claimed in a since-deleted Facebook post that the family had not heard from the woman since her 30th birthday on September 28 until Sunday’s contact.

The father described his daughter as a “solo traveler who travels the world to learn about (different) peoples’) customs and habits.

“She has always respected the traditions and, in certain cases, the obligations of each country she visited,” he said.

Alessia Piperno said in a recent Instagram post that leaving Iran would have been the “wisest” thing for her to do, but that she couldn’t because “I am part of all this.”

However, she said she had made the decision to travel to Pakistan on her birthday.
