How cruel can mother nature be?

A man in his 30s has reportedly died in Brazil after jumping into a lake to escape bees, only to drown and be eaten by piranhas.

According to the local Fire Department, the man was fishing with his two friends on Sunday when a swarm of bees suddenly attacked the trio. The men ran for their lives and one jumped into a lake near the parish of Brasilandia de Minas.

According to the rescue service, two of the friends managed to escape to the other bank. The 30-year-old was attacked by piranhas.

A firefighter who performed the rescue said the carnivorous fish has disfigured the man’s face and other parts of his body.

It’s not yet known if the attack came before or after the man’s death.

The man’s friends also jumped into the water, but swam to safety.

Piranhas are predatory fish that are native to South American waters. There are about 30 piranha species in the world; all live in South America’s Amazon River basin.

The animals live in swarms and are known for their razor-sharp teeth.

They can use them to tear whole pieces of meat out of their victims’ bodies.
