It was more than 40 degrees in the cargo hold: the Mexican authorities found dozens of dehydrated refugees in an abandoned truck. Any help came too late for a woman and her unborn child.

An abandoned and overheated truck with dozens of refugees has been found in northern Mexico. According to the authorities, a pregnant woman and her unborn child died. In addition, 14 people were hospitalized, most with severe dehydration.

According to the information, a total of 64 people were found, and the temperatures in the cargo hold were more than 40 degrees. As the authorities said, the number of people in the truck could have been even larger, so some could have fled.

The people came from Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Cuba, among them were reportedly six children. The dead person was a Nicaraguan citizen.

Escape from violence and poverty

Numerous people seeking protection from South and Central America are fleeing violence and poverty in their countries and are trying to get to the USA via Mexico.

Last year, the number of asylum applications in Mexico hit a record. Many applicants had probably initially tried to get to neighboring USA. The number of people apprehended attempting illegal entry at the US southern border has risen sharply in the past year.
