Even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 1.8 million people had been living in mines for eight years.

As of April 4, 80 thousand square kilometers of territory were mined in Ukraine, which is one of the highest rates in the world.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs released this information on tweeter.

“Ukraine is one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world. Even before the ongoing military offensive, over 1.8 million people were already living surrounded by mines for eight years,” the agency tweeted.

“While the heavy fighting takes place in many parts of Ukraine, reportedly, new mines are planted near residential houses, hospitals, and along roads,” they added.

If the first wave of Russian armed assault against Ukraine in 2014 required the clearing of approximately 16,000 square kilometers of Lugansk and Donetsk regions, today, according to preliminary estimates, we are talking about approximately 80,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory.

At the same time, it is reported that more than 1.8 million people had been living in a minefield for eight years prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
