A cargo ship is on fire on the border between Canada and the United States

Before the fire, about 40 containers with cargo fell into the sea from the ship. The fire is associated with two containers containing hazardous substances.

A fire broke out on the container ship Zim Kingston, which is located near the border between Canada and the United States.

This was reported on Saturday, October 23, by the Global News TV channel.

According to the media, a few days ago, due to bad weather, about 40 containers fell into the sea from a ship sailing under the Maltese flag. Zim Kingston is currently anchored in the Juan de Fuca Sound between Port Angeles, Washington and Victoria, British Columbia.

According to the Canadian Coast Guard, the fire is associated with two containers containing hazardous substances. The US Coast Guard announced on Twitter that, together with Canadian colleagues, it is monitoring the ship and the containers on it.

CityNews journalist John Ackerman said on Twitter that after the fire, 10 crew members were evacuated from the ship. Information on the number of the remaining sailors on the ship, as well as on whether the fire was extinguished, is not provided.

According to the coast guard, Zim Integrated Shipping Services, which owns the MV Zim Kingston, has engaged two ships for salvage operations. On Sunday, they are scheduled to assist with both the firefight and the recovery of lost shipping containers.

The US Coast Guard stated on Friday that it has detected a number of the lost containers floating at sea, some of them on the surface and floating north.

Mariners in the United States and Canada are being advised to use caution at sea and keep an eye out for the containers, which could pose a threat.

The MV Kingston arrived at British Columbia at the end of a cruise from South Korea.
