Brazilian President cancels government subscription to Folha de S.Paulo

One of the largest Brazilian newspapers, Folha de S.Paulo, reported on Friday that it had lost subscription from the country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro office, and the government.

“Today I decided that the federal government will unsubscribe from Folha de S. Paulo. My decree means that no structure of my government will receive the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo in Brazil. This is decided, “the publication quoted the statement of Jair Bolsonaro.

“I hope no one accuses me of censorship. Really? If someone wants to buy Folha de S. Paulo for his own money, he will not be punished for it. His assistant will go to the newsstand, buy it and even if is having fun. But I don’t want to know anything more about the Folha de S. Paulo, “the President of Brazil added.

Later, during a speech that was relayed on its official pages on social networks, he noted that his government “will not spend money on a newspaper like this.”

The newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, in turn, issued a statement in which its editorial staff regretted the president’s decision, but noted that they would retain the editorial policy.

“(Editorial) regrets the similar attitude of the president of the country towards a newspaper that is openly discriminatory, but intends to maintain a critical approach in journalism, as well as its inherent impartiality (when covering information) about politics,” statement.

The newspaper indicates that the Brazilian president previously called it “the main source of fake news in the country.”

Earlier, Bolsonaro also criticized Veja magazine and the Globo television and radio company, which, along with the Folha de S. Paulo, are one of Brazil’s largest media outlets.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump unsubscribed from the New York Times and The Washington Post.
