Instagram bans social media-funded bloggers from talking about politics

Content creators who receive money from Instagram for shooting videos for IGTV are committed not to talk about “social issues, elections or politics” in videos for the service. This is reported by Bloomberg agency with a reference to a copy of the contract, which is signed by users. This condition alarmed some authors and influencers, to whom the social network offered to shoot videos for IGTV, the sources of the agency noted.

Instagram is ready to compensate authors for the cost of producing content in exchange for a certain number of posts. The amount of compensation, according to Bloomberg, can reach several thousand dollars. According to the source of the agency, the company has already concluded dozens of such contracts. The largest amount of the contract exceeded $250,000 for 20 posts.

Facebook spokesperson (owns Instagram) said that in recent years, the company has put forward certain rules for authors who compensate for the cost of producing content. “We believe that there is a significant difference between the publication of political content on our platform and its financing,” he emphasized. Restrictions are associated with the presidential election in the United States in 2020 – social media executives fear that they might use it for political interference in the same way as Facebook in 2016, writes Bloomberg.

The agency notes that Instagram policies contrast with the position of its parent company. Facebook‘s founder Mark Zuckerberg said earlier that the social network was exploring the possibility of banning political advertising, but abandoned the idea, explaining the decision by saying that people should have freedom of expression. So he reacted to the collective letter of the company’s employees who criticized the social network policy, allowing to place inaccurate political advertising.
