No one can take away Assam’s rights and unique identity: Narendra Modi

Today, people broke curfew in Guwahati, Assam to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the people of Assam burning in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. The Prime Minister said that Assam has no need to worry with the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament. In one of his tweets, Narendra Modi said, ‘I want to assure you that no one can take away your rights, unique identity and beautiful culture. It will continue to grow and thrive.’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that the central government and they are committed to ensuring constitutional protection of political, linguistic, cultural and land rights of the people of Assam.

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill after detailed discussion. 125 votes were cast in favour of the bill while 105 members voted against it. Earlier on Monday, the Lok Sabha approved it. Protests have continued in the Northeast since then. Protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Guwahati, Assam, people violated the curfew this morning. Army has conducted a flag march here. Curfew was imposed indefinitely in Guwahati on Wednesday night after the continuous protests. BJP offices have been attacked in many places in the state. On the other hand, in Tripura, there is a situation of chaos in the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill provides for Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees – Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christian communities who came to India by 31 December 2014 due to religious persecution from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
