Thousands of Hong Kong protesters have returned to the streets to reiterate their demands and show their dissatisfaction with the Government led by Carrie Lam, who since last Saturday is in Beijing on an official visit to meet with the Chinese authorities.

This Sunday, in the middle of the pre-Christmas shopping season, groups of masked protesters, dressed in black (the color chosen by the pro-democratic side), toured several shopping centers in the British ex-colony, singing slogans such as “Fight for freedom” and “Give us back the Justice”.

At least one shopping center recorded acts of vandalism and minor clashes with police officers.

Also yesterday, several hundred people, many of them social workers, gathered to reiterate the five demands of the pro-democratic movement.

These include the withdrawal of the bill (already achieved), an independent investigation into police brutality when repressing protests, amnesty to the more than 6,000 detainees to date, the withdrawal of the term “revolt” to the demonstration of June 12, and universal suffrage to elect the head of the local Executive and the deputies.

The Chinese Prime Minister, Li Keqiang, urged on Monday the Chief of the Hong Kong Executive, Carrie Lam, who since last Saturday is in Beijing on an official visit to meet with the Chinese authorities, to continue making efforts to end “violence and chaos” in the financial city.

In their first meeting since protests broke out in the city six months ago, Li acknowledged to Lam that “the challenges” in the city “have increased” in these months and that they have meant a “serious setback” for the local economy, according to He has picked up the local press.

“Hong Kong has yet to overcome many difficulties. The local government must continue making efforts to end violence and chaos in accordance with the law,” said Li, who also stressed the need to “study urgently” how to solve the “most entrenched” conflicts in Hong Kong society.

Li has added that the Hong Kong economy is facing an “obvious economic recession,” and that many sectors have suffered “a severe setback.”

“It is a complicated, serious and unprecedented situation, ” Li said, adding that the Chinese government continues to rely on the local Lam executive to “restore order” in the financial city.
