Time travelers: The aircraft that left in 2020 landed in 2019 and celebrated the end of the year twice

Three aircraft crossed the international date change line that is between the coast of Asia and the west coast of the United States, over the Pacific Ocean

On January 1, 2020, three aircraft took off, which when they landed on their watch, marked that it was still 2019 and that they were still ahead of the year celebration. “Time travelers”, as they have already been called, experienced this phenomenon due to the direction of rotation of the Earth (which turns from west to east) and the time zones. The three aircraft crossed the international date line (IDL) that is between the coast of Asia and the west coast of the United States, over the Pacific Ocean.

According to the Flightradar24 website, known for being the most popular page showing real-time information about air traffic around the world, the NH106 of Nippon Airways that flew from Tokyo to Los Angeles was one of those who experienced this phenomenon.

The plane took off from the airport at 00:24 local time, so it was already January 1 of the new year. In fact, the passengers already celebrated the arrival of the new year just before heading to their destination.

However, around 4:30 p.m. on December 31, they landed in the United States, with more than seven hours ahead to celebrate the end of the year.

Leaving at 00:15 in Hong Kong on the night of January 1, the Cathay Pacific CX880 arrived in Los Angeles after 8:15 p.m., so, again, passengers were able to go to their homes and party for double game 2020.

The most striking case is that of the ANZ40 flight of Air New Zealand that left Auckland at 11:05 a.m. on day 1 and arrived at Papeete, in Tahiti, at 4:42 p.m. on December 31, 2019.

The surprising thing is that the flight only took four hours, but the date change occurred because both locations are close to the international line.
