Trump extends the veto to Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese phones for another year

Published on

US President Donald Trump has signed the executive order to extend the ban on US companies to acquire and use devices made by foreign technology companies that may pose “a risk to national security,” such as the Chinese ZTE and Huawei, thus renewing the veto declared a year ago.

“The unrestricted acquisition in the United States of information and communication technology or services designed, developed or provided by persons controlled or subject to the jurisdiction or direction of foreign adversaries increases their ability to create and exploit vulnerabilities in information and communication services or technologies with potentially catastrophic effects,” says Trump.

“This risk continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to national security, foreign policy and the United States economy,” he adds.

Thus, the US President has ordered that the “national emergency”, declared on May 15, 2019, must remain in force for a year beyond May 15, 2020.

Following the presidential veto in May 2019, the U.S. Department of Commerce included Huawei Technologies and several of its subsidiaries in more than twenty countries in a list of entities from which US companies cannot acquire technological components without permission from the United States Government, although it has successively issued temporary licenses to the Chinese manufacturer regarding of these penalties.

In this sense, the last exemption granted to the Chinese company last March expires this Friday, so it is expected that the United States Department of Commerce announces the granting of a new temporary license.
