COVID-19 outbreak forces Beijing’s largest agricultural wholesale market to close

The largest wholesale market for agricultural products in Beijing, Xinfadi, closed for disinfection after several people tested positive for COVID-19.

All Xinfadi staff, which covers 112 hectares, will be subjected to nucleic acid tests, according to a statement released by authorities, according to the Xinhua agency. The market has about 1,500 administrative employees and 4,000 tenants.

Concerns about the second wave of coronary heart disease are growing, even in many countries that appear to have stopped spreading. The new virus was first detected in a food market in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, in central China, in December.

Authorities in Beijing had previously suspended the sale of beef and mutton wholesale markets in the city.

Concerns about the risk of further spread of the virus: large supermarket chains in Beijing withdrew salmon from their shelves overnight after locating SARS-CoV-2 on cutting surfaces used for imported salmon in the market, the state-run Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The authorities of the Fengtai district, where the fair is located, created an anti-crisis centre and ordered the closure of the kindergartens and schools in the vicinity of Xinfadi, in addition to tightening control in 11 residential complexes in the area.

The Chinese capital reported on June 12 six new cases of local transmission of COVID-19.
