Graphic designer Milton Glaser, the creator of the legendary ‘I ❤ NY’ logo, passed away on his birthday from a stroke. He was 91 years old.

Born in 1929 in the Bronx, Glaser – who studied at Cooper Union School of the Arts – was also a co-founder of New York Magazine. However, he rose to fame by creating the logo that was part of an advertising campaign that began in 1977 and with which the authorities were trying to boost the image of the state, then affected by crime and budget problems.

The legendary logo, which he created for free, cleverly uses typewriter letters and remains one of the symbols of the Big Apple.

After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the artist chose to add a black stain to the red heart and accompanied the logo of the phrase more than ever.

Glaser was also famous for his posters, illustrations, and book and magazine covers that captured the spirit of the 1960s.

In 2009, the designer was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the most important artistic prize awarded by the US Government.
