Scientists create a powerful impossible-to-cut metal ‘Proteus’ | Video

The team of scientists from Durham University (UK) and the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany) developed a new material that cannot be cut.

It is called Proteus in honor of the son of Poseidon and its unique properties are due to a special structure, which blunts all the tools used to try to cut it.

Thus, the Proteus is composed of aluminium cells that are filled with ceramic spheres. A cutting tool is capable of penetrating the outer layer, but when it reaches the ceramic spheres it breaks. The small fragments that form become harder and function as powerful sandpaper that disables any instrument.

According to the scientists behind the new material, it can be used to make safes, locks and light armor.
