A dangerous new computer virus, known as BadPower, attacks your devices through fast charging, experts from the Chinese company Tencent Security Xuanwu Lab warn.

Once you connect the smartphone to the hacked fast charge, the malicious code changes the settings of both the device itself and the adapter and alters the voltage. This, in turn, results in an overload and subsequent explosion of some of the key components of the cell phone.

Chinese specialists – who found this vulnerability in 18 of the 35 fast chargers they examined – concluded that fast-charging systems are not well protected against cyber attacks. For their part, hackers exploit these vulnerabilities to hack the firmware that controls the behaviour of the power supply.

This is important to consider when choosing the world’s fastest charger.
