The cleaning products you use at home may be destroying your endocrine system

Published on

A team of scientists has identified a new list of chemical compounds found in household cleaning products that can adversely affect the human endocrine system.

These chemicals are found in detergents and liquids to clean electronics and other household items, according to New York University scientists.

The study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology warned that within the chemical compounds dangerous for the endocrine system are perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) that are compounds of bromine.

The study authors also noted that most of the studies done on these chemicals are in their early stages and the experiments were mostly done on animals, although they also noted that there are results of some human research. For these reasons, the scientists recommended deepening the studies and minimizing contact with these products.

“The growing evidence supports the urgent need to take steps to reduce exposure to these chemicals we use every day. (…) We have identified complex links between exposure to these compounds with various diseases. Therefore, an systematic assessment of these relationships, “says the scientists’ report.

Many manufacturers are likely to fail to comply with the specific doses of chemicals present in cleaning products such as cleaning items, detergents and products that are used to clean household appliances. As a result, people may suffer from diabetes, breast cancer, obesity, glucose intolerance and even reduced reproductive function.
