Riots in Seattle leave 45 arrests and nearly 59 police officers injured

About 59 officers were injured during the disturbances last weekend in Seattle, local police said they detained 45 people.

“In all, 59 officers were injured throughout the day and one of them was hospitalized. The injuries ranged from scratches and bruises to burns and a torn meniscus,” the entity posted on its website, attaching several images.

The statement added that the police “arrested 45 people at the end of the protest for assaults on officers, refusal to disperse and obstruction.”

At least 21 injured and 45 arrests were reported in the wake of the riots on 26 July, which followed a protest against racism.

About a thousand people gathered around 1 p.m. Saturday on the Seattle Central College campus to express their support for the protests in Portland, Oregon.

The crowd headed toward the Seattle Central District until they stopped in front of juvenile prison, where a protester threw an incendiary object into a window of a construction site, which caught fire. According to firefighters, the fire spread to four other booths.

Police announced they received reports of groups breaking windows of shops and vehicles in various areas. Due to the damage caused, the protest was classified as riots.

Officers used pepper spray and stun grenades to disperse the crowd, but no tear gas.

Protests against police brutality and racism continue in numerous US cities after the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody on May 25.
