One Marine killed and 8 missing in California accident

At least one U.S. Marine was killed and eight others went missing after an accident involving an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) off the California coast, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force said in a statement via from Twitter.

“1 Marine has died, 8 service members remain missing and 2 were injured after an AAV mishap July 30 off the coast of Southern California. All are assigned to the 15th MEU. Search and rescue efforts are still underway with support from the Navy and Coast Guard.” the statement said.

All soldiers are assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) based at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, according to the statement.

Force commander Colonel Christopher Bronzi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, noting that the search continues.

The accident occurred during a routine training exercise in conjunction with the 5th MEU and the Makin Island Ready Amphibian Group, according to the statement.
