The Barakah atomic power plant, built in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was connected to the main electricity distribution network in the country, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) reported to the news agency WAM.

“The Nawah Energy company, which is responsible for the operation and technical maintenance of the reactors of the Barakah atomic power plant, in cooperation with the Transco company, successfully connected the UAE’s first nuclear power plant to the country’s main electricity grid, after making the respective adjustments, and the plant has begun to generate the first megawatts of electrical energy”, says the news.

The energy generated by the nuclear power plant will be distributed throughout the country through the network of high voltage lines, 952 kilometres long.

The UAE authorities announced in early August the commissioning of the first nuclear plant in the country and in the Arab world.

The Barakah nuclear power plant, with four reactors, is located in the Al Dhafra Region, in the west of Abu Dhabi, on the coast of the Persian Gulf, 250 kilometres from the capital.

The plant, whose construction began in 2011, was due to open in 2017, but the start-up of its first reactor was delayed several times.

The second reactor of the plant is ready to be operational, the construction of the third and fourth reactors has already been completed by more than 85%.
