Why are Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio boycotting Facebook?

Mark Zuckerberg seems to have a bad run. Following the hearing in front of the US Congress and the Cambridge Analytica scandal in late 2019, the Stop Hate for Profit campaign now appears to win high-level supporters, including Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Several celebrities have communicated their decision to freeze their activities on their social media accounts Instagram and Facebook, both controlled by Zuckerberg, in order to prevent the proliferation of hatred on these platforms.

This decision is part of the #StopHateforProfit campaign, created in June 2020 by six organizations including ADL (the Anti-Defamation League), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Sleeping Giants, Color Of Change, Free Press, and Common Sense.

According to these civil rights organizations, Facebook is not doing enough to stop disinformation and hate campaigns.

This is the reason given by Kim Kardashian West when communicating to her more than 188 million followers that “Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy”, so she will be freezing her account for 24 hours as of September 16.

“I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to sow division and split America apart – only to take steps after people are killed,” Kardashian West wrote on her Instagram wall.

The reality star and businesswoman aren’t the only ones planning to join the 24-hour freeze, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jennifer Lawrence, Katy Perry and Ashton Kutcher has also spoken out in favor of the campaign, which believes that the company is not doing enough to stop groups that spread hate.

#StopHateforProfit has already hit Zuckerberg’s coffers, causing several companies to stop paying advertising on these social networks. More than 90 companies have joined this boycott, costing him more than $ 7.2 billion of Zuckerberg’s personal wealth, according to information from the BBC.
