Egyptians found 80 sarcophagi dating back 2,500 years

A huge new cache of unopened sarcophagi dating back 2,500 years has been discovered at Saqqara. And this finding was made by the Egyptians two weeks after they found 59 coffins from an ancient necropolis.

Another unique treasure of 80 ancient coffins in the huge necropolis of Saqqara south of Cairo, was found by the Egyptians. Archaeologists have also discovered colorful gilded wooden statues, the Daily Mail reported.

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said archaeologists have discovered a collection of colorful sealed sarcophagi that were buried more than 2,500 years ago.

The Saqqara site is located south of Cairo. The vast burial complex, which also features the step pyramid of Djoser, served as the ancient capital of Memphis. It also includes the famous pyramids of Giza, as well as the smaller pyramids at Abu Sir, Dahshur, and Abu Ruwaysh.

The ruins of Memphis were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1970s.

Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities and Tourism, Dr Khaled El-Enani, said the coffins would be transported to the Grand Egyptian Museum for public display.

Egypt is seeking to publicize its archaeological finds in order to revive its key tourism sector, which has been hit hard by the unrest following the 2011 uprising. The industry has also been hit by the coronavirus pandemic this year.
