A British general warns of the risk of World War III

The chief of the British Defense Staff, General Nick Carter, warned of the global risks posed by the present, in particular, the coronavirus pandemic, in an interview with Sky News, dedicated to Remembrance Day that is celebrated this November 8 in the UK.

The military man stressed that the economic crises of the past had already led to a security crisis, and expressed his concern that this event would be repeated in the context of the damage that the pandemic had caused to the world economy.

Carter noted that, given the many regional conflicts in the world, there is a real risk that “a miscalculation” will have serious consequences.

“The real risk that we have with quite a lot of regional conflicts that we have at the moment is you could see escalation lead to miscalculation. An escalation means more people get involved, more weapons get involved and before you can contain it, it leads to the sides blowing in up in a full-blown war”

Carter said.

The general explained that the regional conflicts often “do not realize the implications of their actions”, which can lead to an escalation, which means that more people and weapons are involved and “before one can contain it”, it ends in “a total war”.

Therefore, Carter emphasized the importance of remembering history and, in particular, paying tribute to defenders on Remembrance Day that his country celebrates.

“We need to remember that history may not repeat itself but it has a rhythm. And if you look back at the last century before both world wars, I think it was unarguable that there was an escalation that led to the miscalculation which ultimately let to war at a scale we hopefully never see again.”

he added.

In this context, the British general warned of the risk of World War III.

“You learn from their experience and you make sure that you’re very cautious about how you manage the sorts of regional conflicts that we see playing out in the world today. If you forget about the horror of war, then the great risk I think is that people might think that going to war is a reasonable thing to do”
