Scientists warn of the danger of vitamin D deficiency

Published on

A severe deficiency of vitamin D affects many aspects of our health, but above all the bones and muscles. Not treating this problem over the years can cause serious health complications, such as fractures and osteomalacia.

Osteomalacia is softening of the bones. Lack of vitamin D can cause bones to become thin, brittle or deformed, clarify specialists from the Mayo Clinic.

In the early stages, osteomalacia may develop without symptoms, therefore it is detected only by X-ray or diagnostic investigations.

In the event of a vitamin D deficiency, results in loss of bone mineral content, bone pain, muscle weakness and soft bones (osteomalacia). As osteomalacia progresses, bone pain intensifies at night or in case of pressure on the bones, as well as muscle weakness. In addition, pain is not always relieved with rest, specialists explain.

Experts from the National Institute of Health of the National Library of Medicine warn that this disease poses a danger spacially for the elderly, since it causes fractures, as well as causes osteoporosis. To prevent vitamin D deficiency, its daily consumption is required, which guarantees good bone density.

According to data published on the Mayo Clinic website, osteomalacia is most often caused by vitamin D deficiency in the body and is characterized by a deficiency in the mineralization of the bone matrix in the cortical and trabecular bone, which leads to the accumulation of osteoid tissue.

Therefore, people who live in less sunny regions and have little exposure to sunlight, or do not eat foods rich in vitamin D, could develop this disease.

Another group of scientists determined that it is necessary to control the level of vitamin D to increase the body’s resistance and reduce the risk of contracting coronavirus since this vitamin intensively stimulates the immune system.
