Could Charles of Wales become the Prince regent of Elizabeth II?

Published on

At 94, Elizabeth II became the longest-lived British monarch in history. But is it possible that she decides to hand over all her functions and duties to her eldest son Prince Charles without abdicating?

Prince of Wales, who turned 72 in November, has already become the longest-running heir in the history of the British royal family. Some analysts believe there is a possibility that the queen could cede the throne to him in the near future.

According to the expert Richard Fitzwilliams, he stated in a comment to the British tabloid Express that, despite the rumors that have circulated for years, “It’s worth remembering that in 1947 when she swore to serve her whole life.”

“She’s a deeply religious person and she meant every word of it and she’s done it absolutely brilliantly,” he stressed. At the same time, he admitted that illness or disability “would upset things.”

Earlier, the journalist and writer Robert Jobson, who specializes in the life of the British royal family, confessed in an interview with Sky News that the monarch “can no longer continue [working] at the same pace”, so Charles has been forced to do “a lot of heavy lifting” for his mother.

The expert suggested that the prince has a good chance of becoming the prince regent of Elizabeth II if she wants to depart from politics to “enjoy her retirement”, as did her husband, Prince Philip, at 96.

“I think there has been a transition,” Jobson stressed, adding that although it is not yet known if it would be a kind of regency, it is obvious that “the Prince of Wales will continue to do more and more things.”
