Two natural supplements that help control ‘bad’ cholesterol

Keeping cholesterol levels under control is essential for good health and avoiding serious heart problems. These two natural supplements can help you control the so-called ‘bad’ cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the blood that is necessary for the body to function properly. In addition to being produced by the liver, cholesterol is also found in some foods. Excess cholesterol in the blood, however, increases your risk of heart disease.

There are two different types of cholesterol: HDL cholesterol, also known as good cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol, popularly called bad cholesterol. The latter accumulates in the arteries, being able to block them and cause heart attacks and strokes.

Several studies have shown that two naturally sourced substances are particularly efficient at controlling LDL cholesterol. These are magnesium supplements and green tea extract, reports The Express.

Magnesium acts as a natural statin, so taking it daily can help reduce bad cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as increase good cholesterol.

Our body needs an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase to produce cholesterol. Magnesium acts precisely in regulating this enzyme, so it helps to maintain an adequate amount of cholesterol in our system.

And When the body is magnesium-deficient, cholesterol continues to over-produce and this causes a buildup of cholesterol that can lead to coronary heart disease.

The green tea is an ancient popular prescription to treat certain medical conditions. Modern research has managed to show that its extract can help regulate cholesterol levels.

study – published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition – in which more than 1,000 people participated, showed that green tea is capable of significantly reducing the concentration of LDL cholesterol in the body.

Although these recommendations have been proven by scientific studies, it is best to consult with a health professional before taking any supplement or medication. Only a specialized doctor can accurately diagnose a possible disease and suggest the most appropriate treatment in each case.
