What should you do if you have a cold when it’s your turn to have the Covid vaccine?

More and more people are being requested to get their coronavirus vaccine – but what should you do if you’re unwell when it’s your turn to have the jab?

Over 87 million people have now received their jab of the coronavirus vaccine across the US.

But what should you do if you are unwell when it’s your turn to have the jab?

Can I have the Covid vaccine if I have a cold?

Essentially, it depends on the severity of your symptoms. While the effectiveness of having the vaccine will not be impacted if you are not 100% when having it, the focus should be on not spreading any potential colds or possibly the virus itself.

Official government guidance states:

If you are unwell, it is better to wait until you have recovered to have your vaccine, but you should try to have it as soon as possible.

You should not attend a vaccine appointment if you are self-isolating, waiting for a Covid-19 test or unsure if you are fit and well.

If you are having any of the common symptoms associated with coronavirus – a high temperature, new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – then you should not attend your vaccine appointment. If you need to change or cancel your vaccination appointment you can do so.

Further it states:

If you’re unwell on the day of your appointment, you should still go for your vaccination if it’s a minor illness without fever.

If you feel very unwell your vaccine may be postponed until you have fully recovered.

Do not attend your vaccine appointment if you feel unwell with symptoms of coronavirus. Self-isolate and book a test instead.
