Tinnitus: How to stop this exploding head syndrome?

Tinnitus is an uncomfortable, and irritating condition that causes stress and affects sleep.

“Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing sounds in your ears or head but no external cause,” says Gemma Twitchen, senior audiologist at Action on Hearing Loss.

“The sounds vary, from a hiss, whistle, whirr, ring or buzz to segments of music. The pitch can be high or low and the duration can vary from a few seconds at a time to continuous noise.”

Gordon Harrison, Chief Audiologist at Specsavers says:

Tinnitus is very common and can occur at any age.

Although it is more common in people who have a hearing loss or other ear problems it can also occur in people who don’t suffer with a hearing loss, particularly if they don’t look after their hearing.

“People who work with loud noises should always make sure they are wearing hearing protection, especially those who work with loud music, loud machinery and those who are exposed to loud bangs or go clubbing frequently.

“You also need to exercise caution when you’re wearing your headphones too, as you could be at risk of developing tinnitus.”

The expert recommends:

To stay safe you should never listen to your music above 60% volume and you should also give your ears a break every hour too.

According to Gemma, “There is no cure – but there are several therapies available to help you manage your tinnitus”.

But Medical counselling, Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), Sound therapy, other therapies such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, chiropractic, herbal medicine, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, reflexology and Shiatsu could help to reduce the symptoms.

Experts also recommend listening to birdsongs, environmental and soothing sounds.
