FDA set to announce rare side effect of Janssen vaccine that affects nerves

Published on

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing to announce a serious and rare side effect of the Johnson & Johnson covid vaccine stating the shot has been associated with a serious but rare side effect — Guillain-Barré syndrome, a very rare and serious condition that affects the nerves, writes the Washington Post.

According to the CDC, around 100 early reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome have been reported since the one-dose vaccination was introduced.

The majority of incidents occurred two weeks after immunization and were primarily in males aged 50 and over.

With only 100 instances recorded out of 12.8 million doses given, the illness is very uncommon, occurring in only 0.000781% of cases.

The warning is the latest setback for J&J’s vaccine, which has been beset by delays, chemical mix-ups, and doses that had to be discarded.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a “rare” neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the network of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord.

Unexplained sensations are the first warning signs.

Tingling in the hands and feet are examples of “unexplained sensations” that may be accompanied by leg or back pain.

Weakness felt on both sides of the body usually follows, which may make climbing stairs particularly difficult.

Other symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome include:

  • Difficulty with eye muscles and vision
  • Difficulty swallowing, speaking, or chewing
  • Pricking or pins and needles sensations in the hands and feet
  • Pain that can be severe, particularly at night
  • Coordination problems and unsteadiness
  • Abnormal heart beat/rate or blood pressure
  • Problems with digestion and/or bladder control.

These symptoms can increase in intensity over time; eventually, a person may become paralyzed.

The condition can even be life-threatening, as it can interfere with breathing, blood pressure and heart rate.
