Taliban announces new name for Afghanistan

The Taliban have proclaimed the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan”. The country had the same name during their reign 20 years ago.

The radical Taliban movement on Thursday, August 19, proclaimed the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

The Taliban used the same name during their reign from 1996 to 2001.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the movement “does not seek to aggravate relations with ethnic and religious minorities.”

“We want to live in peace and strive to prevent a civil war,” he said.

Mujahid noted that the Taliban will solve problems through dialogue and are not going to persecute supporters of the previous government.

Only a few countries recognized that regime at the time, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkmenistan, as Insider’s Jake Lahut has reported.

Meanwhile, Independence Day protests continue in some cities in Afghanistan. In the city of Asadabad, Kunar province, protesters were fired upon.
