Man in his 30s dies hours after receiving COVID-19 vaccine

A man in his 30s died in India on Tuesday night, just hours after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine shot, according to reports.

In the course of a massive vaccination effort in the district on Tuesday, the deceased, named as SK Subhani, was offered a vaccine shot at Mustabada primary health center.

Although he did not exhibit any symptoms until 9 p.m., his family members reported that his condition deteriorated after dinner. He got a high fever, began vomiting, and also suffered from diarrhoea during the night, which lasted all night. He passed away before he could be transported to Gannavaram hospital for treatment.

While his family blamed his death on the vaccine’s negative effects, health officials indicated he died as a result of other issues.

“We have administered a total of 37,000 doses till date without any issues. Subhani got the vaccine on Tuesday and he was kept under observation for 30 minutes. He was sent home after he didn’t exhibit any symptoms” said Dr J Sandhya.

“He was alcoholic and suffered from many other complications. We cannot confirm the exact reason behind his death at this stage, but it’s definitely not due to vaccine,” said the doctor working as a health officer at Mustabadha PHC.

“At present, we can’t confirm that vaccine failure led to Subhani’s death. We can come to a conclusion only after the post-mortem,” Sandhya added. The police registered an FIR under section 174 CrPC (suspicious death) following a complaint from the family.

Subhani’s wife passed away about eight months ago. His son, who is six months old, is his only surviving child. The Gannavaram Police Department has opened an investigation into a suspicious death.

According to data from the state’s health department, a total of nine vaccine-related deaths have been documented across the state to date. However, no single death has been linked to the vaccine, according to the available evidence.

Asha worker B Vijaya Lakshmi from Guntur, who died in January after suffering a heart attack after receiving her vaccination shot, has been awarded an ex-gratia payment of USD 69,000 by the state government to her family.

Prior to allowing a vaccinated person to leave the vaccination center, healthcare staff have been instructed to closely watch the individual for 30 minutes and check for any side-effects or symptoms.

The number of daily coronavirus infections and deaths in India increased dramatically on Thursday, with 47,092 new COVID-19 cases being reported in the last 24 hours. According to reports, this was the largest single-day increase in more than two months. In the previous 24 hours, there have been 509 deaths across the country.
