A multi-pill treatment that can halve the heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death risk by 50%

A multi-pill containing the active ingredients of three widely used drugs could halve the risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a new study.

The research was carried out on more than 18,000 volunteers from diverse nations who had no previous history of cardiovascular disease. The findings of the study were reported in The Lancet Journal.

Researchers have discovered an ideal combination of aspirin, statins, and at least two blood pressure drugs that can reduce the potential risk of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) by 50 percent when used in conjunction with other treatments. Joseph presented the researchers at the European Society of Cardiology Congress. The work was also published in The Lancet Journal of Oncology, which is a peer-reviewed journal.

According to the study, fixed-dose combination (FDC) treatments, both with and without Aspirin, have been shown to be essential for the primary prevention of cardiovascular illnesses, as reported in the Lancet journal.

The research was carried out on more than 18,000 patients and participants from diverse nations who had no previous history of cardiovascular disease. The authors and investigators of the study were reportedly from 13 different countries and every inhabited continent.

The findings were established after three large clinical trials.

The study found that FDCs containing aspirin reduced the risk of heart attack by 53 percent, stroke by 51 percent, and cardiovascular death by 49 percent.

The research further highlighted that the combination of statins and Aspirin together displayed a significant reduction in blood pressure levels, cholesterol levels in patients with or without diabetes.

“The largest effects are seen with treatments that include blood pressure-lowering agents, statin and Aspirin together can reduce fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events by about half,” said Dr. Joseph.

The FDC treatment strategies that researchers have tried so far have been thought to significantly reduce cardiovascular events and are called “polypills” when used in the form of a tablet. Until two years ago, however, there was no evidence of their benefits.

Other scientists and international organizations praised the study results.
