In the United States, parades are also a prominent component of the celebration. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City, which draws over two million people every year, is one of the country’s largest parades.

Every year, the President “pardons” a live Thanksgiving turkey, sending it to a farm rather than allowing it to be butchered, according to another tradition.

Many Native Americans and protesters, on the other hand, observe the occasion as a “National Day of Mourning” to remember those who died at the hands of foreign immigrants during the colonization of America.
