California twins born just 15 minutes apart end up being born in two different years

In Salinas, California, twins who were born 15 minutes apart will never have the same birthdate or even the same year of birth in the same family.

Baby Aylin Trujillo was born at 12:01 a.m. on January 1 at Natividad Medical.  She was the first infant born in Monterey county in 2022, marking the beginning of a new year on the west coast of the United States.

However, her brother, Alfredo Antonio Trujillo, arrived shortly before her, at 11.45 p.m. on 31 December, as the year 2021 came to an end.

“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” said the mother. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”

Aylin weighed 5 lb 14 oz when she was born, whereas Antonio weighed 6 lb 1 oz when he was born. The twins, who are from Greenfield, California, have two elder sisters and an older brother, who is believed to be thrilled to have another guy in the family.

Both babies were seen with their eyes closed, swaddled in matching striped blankets and wearing pink-striped beanies.

Twins born on separate days, months, or years are a rare occurrence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while there were over 3.75 million births in the United States in 2019, just about 120,000 – or about 3% – were twins.

Twin births that take place during the limited window of time between the last seconds of December and the first moments of January are even more uncommon than usual.

“This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career,” said Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at Natividad medical group.

“It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022. What an amazing way to start the New Year!”
