This vitamin increases risk of haemorrhagic stroke by 22%, says study

Supplements are still very popular in the United States, despite mounting concerns about their safety.

Supplement-related dangers are most common at high doses, although extended use of particular vitamins can potentially be dangerous.

According to a study, one common vitamin has been proven to raise the incidence of haemorrhagic stroke by 22%.

Supplements, when taken at the proper dose, are universally regarded by specialists to be beneficial to people of all ages. However, independent tests on a number of products have highlighted concerns about the safety of large doses and long-term use.

According to one study, vitamin E supplements may raise the risk of a haemorrhagic stroke while decreasing the risk of ischemic strokes.

Stroke can be classified into two categories.

According to the health body Cedars-Sinai: “A haemorrhagic stroke occurs when blood from an artery suddenly begins bleeding in the brain.”

An ischemic stroke, on the other hand, is defined as a stroke that occurs “when blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.”

Vitamin E intake may raise the risk of the latter, according to one study.

The authors of the study said: “Given the relatively small risk reduction of ischaemic stroke and the generally more severe outcome of haemorrhagic stroke, indiscriminate widespread use of vitamin E should be auctioned against.”

The researchers discovered that taking vitamin E supplements increased the risk of haemorrhagic stroke by 22% while decreasing the risk of ischemic stroke by 10%.

However, the researchers found that vitamin E had no effect on the overall risk of stroke.

Among the 50,334 people who took vitamin E supplements, there were 223 haemorrhagic strokes.

Marcus Shürks, a researcher at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, conducted the study, which looked at nine international trials with over 118,000 participants.

Vitamin E supplements were given to 59,357 people, while the rest were given a placebo.

Based on their findings, the researchers calculated that for every 1,250 people taking vitamin E, one extra haemorrhagic stroke could occur.

On the other hand, one ischemic stroke could be avoided for every 476 persons who took vitamin E.

Separate studies have revealed that taking 400mg of vitamin E on a regular basis may raise the risk of lung cancer.

A team of experts from the University of Washington in Seattle discovered that ingesting 400 mg of vitamin E for ten years elevated the risk of lung cancer by 28%.

Taking 100 mg of the vitamin every day reduced the risk of disease by 7%.

Vitamin pills should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet, according to health experts, who emphasize that other substances contained in fruits and vegetables are just as vital.
