Harlem apartment shooting: Suspect, 47, who killed 1 NYPD officer injuring other used 2017 stolen gun

Officials say one New York City police officer was killed and another was in critical condition when a gunman opened fire on them in a Harlem apartment on Friday.

According to a police spokesperson, the suspect was shot by a third officer and was in critical condition early Saturday.

The officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 6:15 p.m. regarding a woman having a disagreement with her son, police said.

The mom and one son were at the front of the residence when they arrived. When the two policemen moved down a narrow corridor to the back bedroom where the suspect was, they were shot at without warning, according to authorities.

“As our first officer approached the bedroom, the door swings open and numerous shots are fired, striking both officers,” Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a news conference at Harlem Hospital.

Police say that 22-year-old officer Jason Rivera died in the line of duty. The injured cop was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital.

According to Essig, the suspect, Lashawn Mcneil, 47, was shot in the arm and head by a third officer as he attempted to flee.

Rivera and the second officer are the fourth and fifth New York City police officers to be shot this year, according to the department.

“I am struggling to find the words to express the tragedy we are enduring. We’re mourning, and we’re angry,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.

The shooting shocked NY Gov. Kathy Hochul.

“I know that all of New York is standing with these officers and their families,” she said.

At the site, a Glock 45 handgun with a 40-round extended magazine was discovered. According to officials, the gun was stolen in Baltimore in 2017.

Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain who took office on January 1 after campaigning on a promise to end gun violence, called the shooting a crime against all New Yorkers.

“It is our city against the killers,” Adams said. “This was not just an attack on three brave officers, this was an attack on the city of New York. And it’s an attack on the children and families of this city.”

Adams mentioned the five cops who were shot, as well as an 11-month-old girl who was hit by a stray bullet, and urged the federal government to do more to stop the flow of illegal guns into the city.

“We are not going to live under the gun of dangerous people in New York City,” Adams said.

This week, four of the five gunshots that have injured NYPD officers this year occurred.

On Thursday, a detective was shot while serving a warrant in a narcotics investigation on Staten Island; on Tuesday, an officer was shot in the leg in the Bronx during a struggle with an armed suspect; and on January 1, an off-duty officer was shot while sleeping in his car between shifts, according to officials. The three officers made it out alive.
