Foods that can help reduce the risk of hip fracture by 8%

Several dietary habits, according to Leeds University researchers, have the ability to either reduce or increase the chance of suffering a hip fracture.

Hip fracture is the most common major injury among adults, and current prevention recommendations focus mostly on calcium, vitamin D, and a high protein diet.

The elderly and those with weak bone structure are the most vulnerable, especially after a fall, but women of all ages are disproportionately affected.

Many dietary factors have the potential to minimize or increase the chance of sustaining a hip fracture, according to Leeds University researchers, though further research is needed to confirm this.

The Leeds team investigated the link between different foods, nutrients, and diets with the risk of hip fracture.

Surprisingly, the strongest association discovered was that eating more fruits and vegetables can help decrease the risk of hip fracture by about 8%.

People who followed specific healthy diets, such as the alternative healthy eating index and the Mediterranean diet, or who ate more yoghurt, protein, fruit, and vegetables, showed some protective effects.

Heavy alcohol consumption and vitamin A consumption were found to have negative consequences.

Surprisingly, certain nutrients that were supposed to promote bone health turned out to be ineffective. Other meals and nutrients, such as most dairy products and calcium, had no effect.

“Diet has the potential to reduce the risk of hip fracture throughout life,” says lead author James Webster, a postgraduate researcher from the School of Food Science.

“We could help people reduce their risk of this injury by eating or avoiding certain foods.

“Bringing all the evidence on diet and risk of hip fracture together helps highlight what is known. While the number of population-based studies was limited, we found that fruit and vegetables might be protective”.

The research team is currently beginning on a study of dietary factors connected to hip fracture risk, which will involve around 30,000 women from throughout the United Kingdom.

This will include examining the effects of eating animal products as well as fruits and vegetables, as well as following a vegetarian diet.
