If you like numbers and are good at math, you’re probably going to want to try this. It is a new game inspired by the Internet phenomenon of the moment: yes, that Wordle that we never tire of talking about.
This new “variant” of the popular everyday word guessing game turns it on its head and has you guess a mathematical equation. It’s name is Nerdle and it does raise the difficulty quite a bit for those of us who are more into letters.
How to play Nerdle, the “Wordle of Numbers”
The instructions are “simple”. Just like in Wordle, you have six guesses, but in this version, there are eight “letters”, which are actually the numbers 0 to 9, and the symbols for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division: 0123456789+-*/ =.
Again, just like Wordle, the color of the boxes will change depending on how close you are to the solution. The “word” must be a mathematically correct calculation, so it must always have an “=” symbol.
You should keep in mind things like that to the right of the “=” there will always be a number, and that the standard order of operations applies. That is, you must calculate * and / (multiplication and division) before + and – (addition and subtraction).
As the picture explains: if the number is in the solution and in the right place, it will turn green. If it’s in the solution but in the wrong place, it turns purple. And, if it is not anywhere in the solution, it will appear black.
Nerdle has an easier version with six columns instead of eight which they have called “mini Nerdle“. It also has a colorblind mode, and of course, it lets you share your result in the same style as the original.
Wordle is a little gem of those that remind us of the best parts of the Internet that sometimes seem to no longer exist. The game has become extremely popular and has spawned the creation of multiple versions and clones in multiple languages and with various game modes. Nerdle is a more than interesting twist for those who love numbers.
