James Cook’s ship found after 22 years of search

The search for his ship began in 1999. As part of the research, several vessels of the 18th century were found.

An international team of American and Australian archaeologists have found the wreck of the explorer James Cook Endeavor.

Maritime archaeologists have been looking into many 18th-century shipwrecks in the area since 1999.

The search for the ship lasted for 22 years. It was found off the coast of the United States near Rhode Island.

“I am satisfied that this is the final resting place of one of the most important and contentious vessels in Australia’s maritime history,” says Kevin Sumption, director of the Australian Maritime Museum.

As you may be aware, Endeavor was built in England in 1764. Four years later, Cook went on an expedition to the Pacific Ocean. In 1770 he arrived in Australia and then in New Zealand.

The ship was sold to private owners and renamed Lord Sandwich. It was scuttled by the British fleet in 1778.

At that time, the American War of Independence was going on. A year later, during the third voyage to the Pacific Ocean, Cook was killed in Hawaii.
