Dozens with gastrointestinal issues linked to this breakfast cereal

People around the country are discovering that they got more than they bargained for when they delved into a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal.

General Mills’ morning cereal is causing a stir online after reports that it makes people sick with gastrointestinal problems.

On the website iwaspoisoned.com, at least 139 people from all over the country have reported similar symptoms. They reported nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and a general feeling of being sick.

A user from Chesterfield, Virginia wrote on the site: “I had a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal and about an hour later I had diarrhea, nausea, the chills and stomach cramps. This lasted a few hours and I still suffered from nausea and cramps for a couple of days.”

This is not the first occasion cereal has been associated with illness.

Kellogg’s Honey Smacks sparked a salmonella outbreak in multiple states in 2018. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 135 persons were infected in 36 states, with 34 of them being hospitalized.

In 2010, Kellogg voluntarily recalled 28 million boxes of Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, and Honey Smacks due to a foul odor and flavor coming from the package liners.

Despite the allegations of illnesses, General Mills claims that its cereal is not to blame. The company also stated that it is presently investigating the concerns.

“Food safety is our top priority,” General Mills spokesperson Andrea Williamson told The New York Post on April 1.

“We are aware of consumer claims submitted via the website and have conducted a thorough internal investigation. Based on our food safety programs and review of consumer feedback we’ve received directly, we do not believe these complaints are attributed to our product. We encourage consumers to please share their feedback directly with General Mills to ensure it is captured in our ongoing review.”
