Kangaroo kicks golfer and continues to thrash her – woman seriously injured

Not cute: kangaroos can be pretty aggressive.

A powerful specimen has now seriously injured a golfer. It wasn’t the Australian national animal’s first attack.

A woman was attacked and seriously injured by a kangaroo while playing golf in the Australian state of Queensland. The victim was taken to a hospital “in a stable condition,” local emergency services said on Twitter on Friday.

According to the media, the marsupial attack occurred in Arundel Hills Country Club on the Gold Coast, which is also popular with tourists. The 69-year-old woman suffered serious injuries to her head and jaw, as well as her arms and legs, the broadcaster 9News reported.

Animal attacked without warning

The animal attacked without any warning and suddenly kicked the Australian.

“She’s fallen to the ground with that first kick and while she was on the ground she’s been stomped on a number of times by the kangaroo,” said Joel McEwan, chief of operations for Queensland Ambulance Operations.

The media spoke of a “malicious attack”. It was unclear why the kangaroo attacked the Australian unprovoked.

Normally, the animals are rather peaceful – but they can become aggressive if they feel threatened, said the Queensland Department of the Environment.

Although the risk of this happening is very small, we still need to be wary around them,” it said.

Third kangaroo attack since mid-March

According to 9News, this was the third kangaroo attack Down Under since mid-March. At the time, a teenager was out and about on her moped in the state of Victoria when a kangaroo suddenly jumped out of the forest and pushed her off the bike. The 14-year-old was in the hospital for ten days with multiple injuries. Also in March, a three-year-old girl was attacked by a kangaroo on her home property in New South Wales and seriously injured.

The kangaroo is Australia’s national animal. There are four species of hopping marsupials: the red kangaroo, the eastern gray kangaroo, the western gray kangaroo, and the antelope kangaroo. In tropical Queensland, the eastern gray kangaroo is most common.
