Hunt for Alleged Serial Killer Who Robs and Kills Gay Men

Bilbao police say the suspect tracked down his victims through a gay dating app and then used submission drugs – GHB to rob them before ending their life.

A serial killer is on the move in the Basque Country – an autonomous community in northern Spain, targeting homosexuals.

Bilbao police are on the trail of a serial killer targeting homosexuals. A suspect between the ages of 25 and 30 is said to have murdered at least four gay men in the Basque metropolis with the aim of looting their bank accounts.

It was initially the family of a 43-year-old who drew the police’s attention to it. The man was found dead in Bilbao on October 18. What initially appeared to be a natural death turned into a criminal case when the relatives reported to the police that the victim’s entire assets had been withdrawn from all bank accounts.

Four deaths with a lot in common

A forensic examination confirmed that the man had been given GHB, also known as the “rape drug”, before his death. Suddenly, investigators saw a connection to three more mysterious deaths of gay men. The victims had died in similar circumstances between September and October. The alleged murderer had left hardly any traces of violence on the corpses. An analysis of the frozen blood samples showed that they too had consumed GHB shortly before their deaths.

The police then looked for other similarities in all four cases. It turned out that the men had met a certain Carlos through a popular gay dating app called Wapo, who then visited them at home. All men lived in the old town of Bilbao. After that they were robbed, the cases had been closed after the autopsy due to apparently natural death.

“Carlos” is wanted by the police

As the Spanish news portal ABC reports, the alleged perpetrator is said to be a Colombian who is already wanted for violent robberies and other alleged murders in Madrid and Levante. According to “La Sexta” he has been identified.

Bilbao’s Mayor Juan Mari Aburto admitted in an interview that there was a “tense calm” in his city due to the media reports. But you have to do everything you can to “not alarm” society.

The mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, acknowledged in an interview that the current situation in the capital is one of “tense calm”. He confirmed that the Consistory is aware that the central services of the Ertzaintza are keeping an investigation open but asked for “prudence” and “not to alarm” society. It is, in fact, the only official statement on the matter that has come out since the investigation opened.
