REACT NATIVE: Microsoft switches to C++ for Javascript apps from C#

Microsoft has announced a new implementation of its React Native port for Windows 10. With the help of React Native, applications can be written in Javascript, which are then not displayed in a web view, but instead use native functions of the operating system. With the restart of the port, Microsoft would like to focus more than previously on the upstream code of Facebook and switches for the programming language of C# to C++.

The application interfaces written with React in Javascript are translated by the framework into native views. So far, Microsoft has used its own implementation in C# for this concept known as Bridge . In the future, C ++ will be used for this. The javascript runtime environment will continue to use Chakra, which will continue to be maintained independently, even though the Edge browser will be based on Chromium and the V8 engine in the future.

Microsoft explains the decision for C++ as follows: “React Native’s ongoing alignment involves a closer interaction between C ++ and Javascript, which is difficult to achieve with a separate C# implementation.” For the new implementation the Facebook C++ bridge will be reused by Microsoft.

“This allows React Native to innovate and deliver new features for Windows 10, using the same core as Facebook’s React Native,” the code says. However, the new version of React Native for Windows is still not completed, so the currently available code should probably still be considered as experimental.
