Abdominal Pain After Eating Meat? This Could Be The Potential Trigger – And What You Can Do About It, According To Experts

US Experts reveal a potential trigger behind unexplained digestive problems such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting and solution

If you experience stomach pain after eating, it is important to consult with your GP for a proper diagnosis as there are various potential causes.

If you notice that the pain only occurs after consuming specific foods on a regular basis, it could be a sign of an intolerance or allergy.

It has recently been discovered that lone star tick bites may be responsible for some cases of unexplained digestive issues. The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has released clinical guidance to assist physicians and patients in identifying alpha-gal syndrome, a food allergy triggered by these tick bites. The AGA Clinical Practice Update was published in Gastroenterology today.

Alpha-gal syndrome is a type of allergy that prompts your body to react to the consumption of meat and its byproducts derived from mammals. Typically, symptoms manifest between 2-6 hours after ingestion.

If a patient presents with inexplicable gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, clinicians should consider the possibility of alpha-gal syndrome, particularly if the individual lives or has lived in an area with a high incidence of the condition.

This encompasses regions in the Southeast, mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and East Central areas of the United States. A blood test that detects immunoglobulin E antibodies (IgE) to alpha-gal can aid in the diagnosis of suspected alpha-gal cases.

Individuals who test positive for alpha-gal antibodies may have an alpha-gal allergy. The primary course of action to manage this allergy is to avoid consuming any food items that contain alpha-gal, including mammalian meat, fat, and related products.

What is Alpha-gal syndrome?

Alpha-gal syndrome is a form of allergy that triggers adverse reactions in your body upon the consumption of mammalian products, including meat and byproducts such as cheese, butter, milk, cream, gelatin, and others. Mammals are animals that have hair, such as cows, pigs, and deer.

Symptoms of Alpha-gal syndrome

Typically, symptoms of alpha-gal allergy commence within 2-6 hours of consuming mammalian meat or related products. These symptoms may include gastrointestinal discomforts such as stomach pain, loose stool, nausea, upset stomach, and vomiting.

Additionally, it may cause hives, an itchy rash, flushing of the skin, swelling of the face, or fainting.
