Dementia: Don’t Overdo This Drink As It Can Shrink Your Brain More Than Protecting It

Dementia, a progressive neural disorder, gradually impairs memory, cognition, behavior, and the routine functionality of individuals.

In a startling revelation, the Alzheimer’s Society asserts that every three seconds, someone falls victim to dementia. As you progress through this text, an individual somewhere is likely encountering the onset of memory impairment, disorientation, and changes in behavior.

A recent Australian research study, published in Nutritional Neuroscience, revealed a significant link between high coffee consumption and increased dementia risk. According to their findings, those drinking over six cups of coffee per day faced a 53% higher risk of dementia in later life.

While the exact connection between excessive coffee consumption and neurological health concerns remains unclear, the researchers suggest that maintaining a balanced coffee intake could potentially aid in safeguarding against future cognitive complications.

“Accounting for all possible permutations, we consistently found,” explains lead author Kitty Pham, “that higher coffee consumption was significantly associated with reduced brain volume — essentially, drinking more than six cups of coffee a day may be putting you at risk of brain diseases such as dementia and stroke.”

Dementia represents a progressive cerebral disorder, steadily impairing cognitive abilities, behavioral patterns, and the capacity to carry out daily chores. In Kentucky, over 75,000 individuals aged 65 or older are wrestling with this condition, making it the state’s sixth most deadly disease.

Gregory Cooper, M.D., Ph.D., who is the head of adult neurology and also the supervisor of the Norton Neuroscience Institute Memory Center, opines that while the data uncovered is intriguing, further studies are essential for drawing definitive inferences.

“It looks like a solid study, but it would be hard to reach a strong conclusion yet,” comments Dr. Cooper. “In fact, there is data suggesting that caffeine generally, and coffee more specifically, might even be protective to the brain. The difference is the quantity. Some small amount is good, and too much becomes bad.”

Indeed, Dr. Cooper, an esteemed professional with over two decades of experience in handling dementia patients, states that nearly 40% of dementia instances are avoidable. There are several strategies you can adopt to mitigate your risk of dementia, and they encompass protections against:

  1. Elevated blood pressure
  2. Impaired auditory capabilities
  3. Airborne pollutants, such as passive smoking
  4. Traumatic brain injuries
  5. Overconsumption of alcohol
  6. Tobacco use
  7. Overweight and obesity issues
  8. Lack of physical exercise
  9. Diabetes
  10. Sleep-related disorders

“If you address any of these issues, your chances for developing dementia are much lower,” Dr. Cooper advises. “And as for the coffee, a cup or two isn’t likely to hurt, and could even be helpful, but don’t go too crazy on the caffeine.”
