After a powerful storm hit Rio Grande, Argentina, an extraordinary phenomenon unfolded as thousands of ‘penis fish’ were swept onto the beach.

Measuring up to 10 inches in length, the vibrant pink creatures caused quite a stir among the residents of Río Grande, located in southern Argentina, on the afternoon of July 17.

Referred to as Urechis Unicinctus scientifically, these peculiar organisms have gained the nickname ‘Penis Fish’ due to their resemblance to the male genitalia. However, they are actually a type of spoonworm and are alternatively known as ‘The Fat Innkeeper Worm’.

These unique creatures construct U-shaped burrows in sand or mud, providing shelters for other marine creatures. This behavior explains their ‘innkeeper’ designation. Unfortunately, their exposure during intense storms leaves them vulnerable to predators such as sharks and seagulls.

Remarkably, evidence of their distinct burrows can be traced back over 300 million years, showcasing their resilience throughout history.

These long-lived worms can survive for up to 25 years and are considered a delicacy in countries like South Korea, Japan, and China, where they are savored either raw or cooked in various styles.

Renowned for their chewy texture and surprisingly sweet taste, they are often served with a savory sauce made from sesame oil or vinegar with gochujang.

Recognizing their value, local fishermen have hurried to the beach to collect the ‘penis fish’ as exceptional bait, particularly when targeting seabass.

In a similar incident back in 2019, the peculiar-looking fish also appeared on Drakes Beach near San Francisco after a storm.

Ivan Parr, a biologist from the Western Section of the Wildlife Society, was the first to spot these sea creatures, causing skepticism among other locals who couldn’t believe they were worms.

Parr humorously remarked, “I’ve heard my share of imaginative theories from beachcombers, such as flotsam of a wrecked bratwurst freighter.”

Moreover, these fish are not only a curiosity but also find their way onto the dining tables of markets in South Korea, China, and Japan.

With their unique flavor and texture, these ‘penis fish’ are savored as an intriguing delicacy, often accompanied by a savory sauce comprising sesame oil or vinegar with gochujang.
