As the year draws to a close, many indulge in seasonal delicacies, including alcoholic beverages. While excessive alcohol consumption is harmful at any time, moderate consumption of certain alcoholic drinks may offer health benefits.

Studies indicate that red wine positively affects cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. T

his is attributed to polyphenols, plant-derived substances in red wine, particularly resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant enhancing endothelial function.

A 2015 study involving 60 participants with mild hypertension revealed that a combination of grape juice and red wine extract effectively reduced blood pressure, unlike grape juice alone.

The combination decreased systolic pressure by about 3 mmHg and diastolic pressure by 2 mmHg. This seemingly minor reduction translates into a significant 10% decrease in stroke and heart attack risk across the population.

Red wine consumption also impacts cholesterol levels. It increases HDL (‘good’) cholesterol and decreases LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol. A 2005 study with 69 healthy adults showed that red wine raised HDL cholesterol by 11-16%, an effect not observed with other tested beverages.

Moderate alcohol intake can also prevent atherosclerosis by enhancing apolipoprotein transport, proteins that move fat from the intestines.

Mulled wine’s other ingredients may also benefit cardiovascular health. Cinnamon, for example, contains cinnamaldehyde, a potent vasodilator. Oranges and lemons, rich in Vitamin C, bolster nitric oxide’s vasodilatory effects.

Ginger acts as a natural calcium blocker, promoting vasodilation. Cloves, containing eugenol and nigericin, are believed to have anticancer properties and aid in glucose metabolism. Star anise, a traditional Chinese medicine, is a robust antioxidant with antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

To reap these benefits, moderation is key. Experts recommend limiting consumption to no more than two 175 ml glasses of red wine at a time, equivalent to five to six alcohol units.

Be cautious with mulled wine containing added spirits like vodka or brandy, as these increase the alcohol content significantly.

Exceeding six units for women and eight units for men in one sitting constitutes binge drinking. Prolonged excessive alcohol consumption over the years increases the risk of various health issues, including stroke, heart attack, liver damage, neurological problems, and several types of cancer.
